When a massive fire broke out in Mumbai’s Deonar dumping ground, Divya was curious to learn more about how the city's waste was being managed and the cause of the fire. This incident prompted her to find more information about the current waste disposal system. She was dismayed to learn that the city of Mumbai alone generates over 10,000 tonnes of waste each day, much of which is sent to dumping grounds, where little to no processing of waste is undertaken. She learned that dumping grounds were toxic cesspools and caused grave damage to the environment and to human health. These appalling findings sparked Divya's interest to get involved in the sustainability sector and to act on this issue. She began by taking a closer look at the waste she was generating in her own life and gradually figured ways to reduce or manage it. She diligently segregated her waste, composted her food scraps and recycled her waste. She embarked on a journey towards leading a 'Zero-Waste Lifestyle'.
Today, Divya discards less than 100 grams of waste from her home, once a year.
What began as a personal decision to lead a sustainable lifestyle, eventually led to the birth of Skrap, a sustainability firm offering sustainable and zero waste solutions to businesses and brands.
